Electric bike sales volume in Italy 2015-2023
The number of electric bicycles sold in Italy reached 416,500 units in 2023, growing by nearly 24 percent compared to the previous year. In fact, this trend is projected to continue, with Italian sales of e-bikes forecast to grow by 2.7 percent between 2023 and 2029.
Who is using e-bikes?
The Italians most likely to use an an e-bike, including buying, hiring, and borrowing a bike, are between 35 and 44 years old, followed by 45 to 54 year-olds. Italians who are already cycling one to two days a week are most interested in buying or using an e-bike but interest is also relatively high among those who never cycle, compared to more regular cyclists. Electric bicycles may represent a valid solution to fight pollution and to act against global warming. In Italy, this matches the perception that e-bikes are primarily for environmentally-conscious people.
Cyling in Italy
Over a third of Italians ride a bike at least once a week and cycling is the first choice of transport for short journeys for around 13 percent of Italians. While this does not put Italians among the Europeans most likely to cycle, Italians are more likely to cycle than people in France or the UK.
